Orvieto triptych

acrylic on wood
115 x 95 cm
1995

On my way to Orvieto I came across a sombre workshop in a narrow lane where a carpenter was building crucifixes by joining together two pieces of rough wood, hardly outlined.  He was putting the pieces together, carving out one of the ends of the cross to give it the likeness of a face with unostentatious simplicity and ancient fervour.   Local people would jokingly call him the “Pinocchiaro” (Pinocchio-maker).
