The Philosopher

oil on canvas
70 x 50 cm
1943

An old man, looking like a strange beggar philosopher. Abstine et sustine is the motto of my family. This painting was made by my father, Sauro Ballardini, in 1943, before he went to war. The character depicted was custodian of the Church of the Commenda of Faenza, in Borgo Durbecco. Local children used to call him Barbetta. He would repair weighing scales for an occupation, but only until midday, when he would go around taverns to meet friends.
